Newbury best bets: Miss Collada targets hat-trick, Larchill Lass no forlorn each-way hope

The Brimming Water ans Sam Twiston-Davies winning at Newbury, February 2022

The biggest prize on Saturday’s card has attracted a huge field, with 19 lively two-year-olds offering the prospect of a thrilling cavalry charge down Newbury’s five-furlong track.

15:35 Newbury: Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes  (5 furlongs 34 yards)

Two wins from his first five starts and a runner-up spot last time out 15 days ago have been enough to convince the bookies of the calibre of It Ain’t Two, whose chances won’t be harmed by the presence of Oisin Murphy at the helm.

Besides the favourite, there is plenty of recent winning form among his closest market rivals, with Vingegaard, Time For Sandals and Kaadi all clearly capable of making their presence known here.

Just about getting our final nod of approval, however, is the highly-rated filly, Miss Collada, who has shown great progress for Richard Hannon, whose yard boasts a great record in this particular race, with four wins in the last decade.

Suggested best bet: Miss Collada each-way in the 15:35 at Newbury

Third behind Mountain Breeze at Newmarket’s Guineas meeting in early May, she only had to wait eight days to convert that promise into a maiden victory on Wolverhampton’s all-weather track, easing home by almost four lengths.

Another 12 days later, Miss Collada was tasting her first turf success at Salisbury, again with plenty in hand as she saw off seven rivals in a novice sprint over this minimum trip.

The form of those wins was nothing to set the pulse racing, but with Tom Marquand at the reins, it would be unwise to discount a horse from a yard that landed two winners (8/1 and 11/1) at this venue on Friday.

With 14 of the 19 scheduled starters carrying a double-digit price, it’s no surprise that Tipstrr’s each-way aficionados have come out in force for this wide-open race.

Pont Neuf, Do It Now and Mapledurham all have their backers, but attracting most attention is bottom-weight filly, Larchill Lass.

Karl Burke’s two-year-old had to settle for the runner-up spot on her first two outings at Beverley in early spring, before enjoying her first taste of victory in a seven-runner maiden at Carlisle in late May.

She was clearly asked too much when pitched into a Group 3 contest at Chantilly five weeks ago, but this return to less demanding company makes her a very interesting prospect, carrying a featherweight handicap under Jimmy Quinn.

Alternative outsider punt: Larchill Lass each-way in the 15:35 at Newbury
