Newbury best bet: Step up in trip looks tailor-made for Two Shoes

Newbury

The morning withdrawal of Charlie Appleby’s firm early favourite Symbol Of Honour has opened the door for the remaining nine starters to stake their claim in this lively six-furlong sprint at Newbury.

The Richard Hannon-trained Principality looks an able replacement at the top of the betting after landing the odds in a six-furlong novice at Goodwood in early June, although he proved to be 10 lengths out his depth when tested in Group 2 company at the Curragh last time out 19 days ago.

He is unlikely to meet horses of that standard here, but that result does give hope to his closest market rival Big Cyril, who built on a third-placed debut to win at the second attempt after making all over this distance at Ayr a month ago.

Principality’s half-brother Calyxoh is another likely to go well under Tom Marquand after putting in a good shift to come eighth of 27 behind Ain’t Nobody in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Deeper in the betting, the two fillies in the race should not be underestimated under their three-pound allowance, with both coming here off the back of recent wins.

Of the two, it is Julie Camacho’s Two Shoes who appears to have the most scope for improvement, and the most likely to have what it takes to be competitive in this company.

Suggested best bet: Two Shoes each-way in the 16:10 at Newbury

We only have one outing on which to make that assessment, but what really caught the eye in her five-furlong debut win at Carlisle three weeks ago was the manner in which she overcame a poor position to storm home by a neck, with the remaining six runners strung well out down the track.

Having settled in midfield, she finally made some headway when switched by Ryan Sexton approaching the furlong pole, but even at that point she was fifth and seemingly well held, before finding something extra to burst through the field and the line with her nose in front.

The manner of that finish suggested she would have kept going away to win by a distance had there been another furlong to navigate, so this six-furlong trip should give her the perfect chance to play to that strength.

Sexton does not make many trips to Newbury, but his only two previous rides here in the last five years did include a 28/1 winner, so it will be interesting to see if he can make that two out of three on board his only ride of the day.
