Haydock each-way tips: Sergeant Pep target frame finish in wide-open handicap

Tucked away among all the general Election hullabaloo there’s a decent afternoon of racing to enjoy at Haydock, where this six-furlong sprint looks chock full of each-way betting opportunities.

15:40 Haydock: Supalite Group Handicap (6 furlongs)

The bookies appear to have this contest earmarked as a two-horse race between a couple of four-year-olds, Tiriac and Albert Cee, who both arrive with some decent form behind them.

Tiriac quickly chalked up two wins this term over this trip at Windsor and York in the spring, before finishing a decent third at the latter venue 19 days ago, and although now carrying 12 pounds more than his last winning mark, the handicapper does not appear to have caught up with him just yet.

Albert Cee is another to incur the wrath of the handicapper, and has been bumped up ten pounds to pay for the ease of his victory in his solitary 2024 outing over this distance at Chepstow 17 days ago.

With one of those looking likely to win, you wouldn’t want to be on the wrong one, so we’re swerving both in favour of each-way value elsewhere, with all of the remaining 11 starters available at double-digit odds and with four places widely available.

Deeper in the betting, Kit Gabriel might be worth monitoring as he makes a belated season debut for David Loughnane, but it is another four-year-old, Sergeant Pep, who has caught the eye of a number of Tipstrr’s each-way aficionados.

Outsider punt: Sergeant Pep each-way in the 15:40 at Haydock

A winner at the second attempt at the back end of 2022, Clive Cox’s son of Kodiac progressed throughout a busier three-year-old campaign, eventually winning at Windsor in August, before rounding off the season by seeing off a dozen rivals in convincing style at Bath in October.

Although yet to replicate those performances in four attempts this term, three of those outings were under an inexperienced claimer, so the booking of Dougie Costello here should hopefully bring a more accomplished ride.

Costello has landed three close-up runner-up spots in his last four rides, and after seeing their charge trail in a distant 12th of 13 last time out a month ago, connections of Sergeant Pep would probably settle for a similar outcome here.
