Doncaster top racing tip: Step up in distance and class can bring the best out of See The Fire

Doncaster Racecourse

Two early-morning withdrawals have reduced the field for this testing straight mile renewal to just seven runners, but enough quality remains on show to suggest we’ll be in for an absorbing race.

15:00  Betfred May Hill Stakes (1 mile straight)

Despite being won by 40/1 outsider Polly Pott last year, this renewal tends to be kind to the market leaders, with seven of the last 10 winners priced under 4/1, including Inspiral at prohibitive odds of 2/9 in 2021.

Karl Burke’s Darnation will come out of the stalls as a well-fancied favourite after confirming a promising third-placed debut with back-to-back wins at Thirsk and Goodwood, both of which were notably with appreciable cut in the ground.

While Darnation looks to have plenty in his favour,  she is unlikely to have things all her own way, and well fancied to give her a run for her money is the less exposed See The Fire from Andrew Balding’s yard.

Raced just once over a month ago, she quickly found her stride over seven furlongs at Newmarket, leaving 11 rivals strung out behind her in convincing fashion.

When one of Balding's horses wins first time out they are invariably top class as his runners tend to come on enormously for their first runs, and he clearly rates this filly highly enough to bump her up in class with no hesitation.

While that maiden success was on firmer ground than See The Fire will find here, everything in her breeding suggests she will be suited by the extra furlong, and the booking of Oisin Murphy is another sign that big things are expected of this promising filly.

Suggested bet: See The Fire each-way in the 15:00 at Doncaster
