Beverley racing tip: Ugo Gregory poised to strike at happy hunting ground

A view of Beverley racecourse

From a market that suggests we’re in for a two-horse race, the bookies’ radar might just have failed to pick up a lurking presence of a capable contender with a proven record at the Yorkshire track.

17:10 Beverley: Dennis Smith Memorial Handicap (7 furlongs 96 yards)

Despite a disappointing showing at Leopardstown last time out, early favourite Urban Sprawl appears to be the one to beat here on the strength of his earlier performances against much stronger opposition, not least his third-placed finish behind Docklands in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He is joined at the top of the betting by David O’Meara’s top weight Zozimus, who has attracted a surge of market support after being available as high as 13/1 on Monday evening.

As those two create a somewhat top-heavy market, the drifting prices lower down suggest some overpriced each-way value elsewhere, not least in the shape of Tim Easterby’s experienced seven-year-old handicapper, Ugo Gregory.

Four of Ugo Gregory’s ten career successes have come over this course and distance, so he should relish this return to a clearly favoured venue.

The last of those wins was by a comfortable two-length margin five outings ago in July, since when he has proved he is far more than a one-track pony by winning with even more in hand in a nine-runner handicap at Haydock last month.

He was last seen coming a respectable runner-up to Give It Some Teddy at Chester 11 days ago, when the cut in the ground appears to suit, as it should again at Beverley in this step up in grade.

Should either or both of the two principals falter, then this exposed gelding has the credentials to put himself in the mix at a decent price.

Suggested bet: Ugo Gregory each-way in the 16:35 at Beverley
