Ayr best bet: Course-distance winner Eternal Sunshine lines up for quick-fire hat-trick

Ayr Racecourse

Ayr racecourse rarely fails to serve up a decent Monday afternoon meeting, and this six-furlong handicap looks likely to be one of the most intriguing renewals on another competitive card.

If the early market is a reliable benchmark, then we should be in for a three-horse race between the market leaders, who are separated by less than a single betting point on or around the 3/1 mark.

Ramon Di Loria will be looking to go one better than his one-length runner-up spot over this course and distance last Monday, while Novello Lad will be better rested after landing the odds over this trip at Doncaster 24 days ago.

Pick of our likely trio, however, is Jim Goldie’s lightly-raced Eternal Sunshine, who has been showing a very encouraging uptick in form over the last month.

After three underwhelming outings last autumn, he fared little better in his first run as a four-year-old in early June, beating only one of his dozen rivals in a five-furlong season debut at Musselburgh.

Suggested best bet: Eternal Sunshine in the 16:15 at Ayr

e showed a little more competitive appetite when fourth of eight at the same venue 12 days later, but it was when he was stepped up to six furlongs that he seemed to find his optimum trip.

A hard-fought half-length win in in 18-runner handicap at Thirsk came somewhat out of the blue, but he wasted no time in proving it was no fluke over this course and distance a fortnight ago, when he eased clear a furlong out and was well on top at the line.

Significantly, those last three eye-catching outings have all come under the capable guidance of Paul Mulrennan, who boasts an impressive record at his native Scottish courses, and indeed landed a 129/1 treble at Hamilton as recently as Friday evening.

Should the performances of  any or all of the three principals fail to match their market support, then a few of their seven rivals are lurking in the wings, waiting to pounce on at least a minor place.

It’s only five weeks three outings since Newyorkstateofmind won tidily at Hamilton, and he could well improve on his less eye-catching recent showing now that he has better ground.

Attracting the attention of some of Tipstrr’s each-way specialists, however, is the Iain Jardine-trained Jkr Cobbler, who clearly has a liking for the Ayr track, having landed figures of 34111323 in his eight consecutive outings here last summer.

He hit the ground running when landing a 10-furlong handicap at Carlisle on season debut seven weeks ago, and although not reaching those heights in two subsequent appearances, this drop in trip should bring a better showing than his last-of-nine over a clearly unsuitable one-mile trip here a week ago

Alternative each-way punt: Jkr Cobbler each-way in the 16:15 at Ayr
