Badass Baaeed heads nine for Newbury Lockinge

Baaeed

The Lockinge at Newbury is one classy race and unbeaten badass Baaeed is bidding to keeping his win streak going by rolling over the opposition for William Haggas.

Monster miler Baeed tops the list of nine entered for the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on Saturday, May 14.

William Haggas' unbeaten colt enjoyed a mind-blowing debut season in 2021, going from a Leicester maiden to winning the QEII on Champions Day at Ascot.

The Sea-The-Star four-year old swept up various Group 1 silverwear including the Prix du Moulin at ParisLongchamp and will likely be odds-on at Newbury to stretch his unbeaten run to seven.

Yet, Aidan O'Brien is on a hot streak of his own and sends classy filly Mother Earth, the winner of the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Prix Rothschild at Deauville last term.

Baaeed will face a seasonal reapparance but Zoffany filly Mother Earth already has a win in March under her belt, taking a Group 3 at the Curragh.

Richard Hannon goes with Chindit and Etonian with Chindit winning the Doncaster Mile in March but Etonian only finishing ninth in the same month at Newbury.

Godolphin's Real World comes back to the UK after failing to make much of an impression in the Saudi Cup or the Dubai World Cup

Yet Saeed bin Suroor's five-year-old was on a five-timer last summer and can't be dismissed.
"He's in very good form, he did his last piece of work today. He's working well and is in good condition and I'm looking forward to running him," said the Godolphin trainer.
"We had to try him on the dirt in Saudi and in the World Cup as they are such big races, but he didn't handle it well. We've gave him the chance but that's it, no more, it will be turf now all the time.
"The Lockinge is obviously a top-class race and Baaeed looks a very good horse, he looks a superstar.
"We'll take our chance against Baaeed, so far I'm happy and he's working well."

Meanwhile, Ralph Beckett's New Mandate, Sir Busker of William Knight), John and Thady Gosden's Sunray Major and Alcohol Free (Andrew Balding) finish off the line-up.

The Group 2 Lockinge Stakes takes place at Newbury racecourse on Saturday, May 14. The race stars at 15.20 and is live on ITV Racing.
