Yarmouth free racing tip: Drop in class boosts each-way hopes for improving outsider

Thundering Home ridden by jockey Matthew Davies (No. 5) comes through to win the digibet Handicap Stakes on day one of the July Meeting at Great Yarmouth Racecourse

It might be a relatively quiet Wednesday at the races, but there’s still enough quality action for our tipsters to get their teeth into, including this competitive-looking handicap at Yarmouth.

16.05 Yarmouth: Goffs Orby Handicap (1 mile 1 furlong 21 yards)

Sierra Blanca was a useful performer for Aidan O’Brien a couple of seasons ago, but has yet to look quite as impressive since making the trip across the Irish Sea,

That said, he looked close to rekindling his promising two-year-old form last time out 18 days ago when a step-up in distance appeared to suit his strengths.

Piloted for the first time by Tom Marquand, who is notably rebooked here, Martyn Meade’s four-year-old finished fifth of sixth but was barely more than three lengths behind the winner Flying Frontier, and posted a career-best performance and speed figure.

Sierra Blanca has had three runs so far this season, and has seen his mark drop from 2022’s 101 to a much more palatable 92,  which should make him much more competitive against the lowest-class opposition he has faced since his maiden days.

He might not have enough to get ahead of the hot short-priced favourite, Roi De France, but the remaining frame places look very much up for grabs.

Best Bet: Sierra Blanca each-way in the 16:05 at Yarmouth
