Yarmouth free racing tips: Unexposed gelding to step up after recent near misses
The Flat season might be coming to a close, but there’s still plenty of decent racing to enjoy at Yarmouth’s penultimate meeting of the year, including this competitive middle-distance handicap.
16:35 Yarmouth: Free Digital Racecard at raceday-ready.com Handicap (1 mile 3½ furlongs)
Sheena West has her runners in good form, with a winner and a runner-up from two completed starts over the last fortnight, and her only runner of the day anywhere today is Macari, who has a good opportunity to go one better than his second of seven at Newmarket 11 days ago.
That run came in a higher-graded Class 4 handicap over 12 soft furlongs and the only one to beat him was Hugo Palmer’s very useful three-year-old, Wonder Kid, who is now rated 95 (way above this sort of standard).
In finishing second to that classy winner, Macari pulled no less than 14 lengths clear of the rest of the field, which featured runners rated 76-85, with all the horses whom Macari beat by that wide margin rated significantly higher than any of those he faces off the same mark today.
Best Bet : Macari each-way in the 16:35 at Yarmouth
That was the first time that Macari had raced further than 10 furlongs in a Flat handicap, so he remains completely unexposed over this distance.
The best of his 10f efforts came just prior to his Newmarket run, when he finished a never-nearer third of 12 at Windsor, where he strongly suggested he was going to need a longer trip in this sphere.
Dropping down from higher-tier Class 4 company to today’s lower-tier Class 5, he looks an attractive bet under Trevor Whelan, who has ridden him the last twice, and looks in good shape to extend his trainer’s impressive record at this track.
Of the others, Hakuna Babe can out-run her early prices on the back of an eye-catching performance at Haydock last month.
That first attempt over this trip came in stronger 0-76 company, and she finished a never-nearer fifth of 10, but she was beaten only 2¼ lengths and she would have finished a lot closer had she enjoyed anything like a clear run in the closing stages.
As it was, she had to be switched out wide before finishing off nicely without being given a hard time, suggesting there is clearly a lot more to come from her over this distance and this is a lesser race, which she contests off an unchanged mark (which was 8lbs higher at the start of the season, so she is nicely treated here).
Next Best Bet: Hakuna Babe each-way in the 16:35 at Yarmouth
