Southwell free racing tip: Lenny’s Spirit targets overdue return to former glories

The clear early market leader is the Charlie Johnston-trained Mon Etoile, who is the only last-time-out winner in the line-up (three weeks ago at Newcastle), and is expected to do well again here under Jason Hart.

If the favourite’s short price does not appeal, then there could be a more attractive each-way option in Lenny's Spirit, who has caught our attention here, despite some off-putting form lately.

However,  sometimes recent numbers do not tell the full story, and after a handful of unfancied outings under amateur riders, Ed Dunlop’s six-year-old will be ridden by a more professional jockey this time in the shape of Daniel Muscutt.

After beginning this season with a rating of 73, Lenny’s Spirit has dropped to a very favourable mark of 60 which should make him very dangerous in a low-key race of this nature.

He has had nine fruitless attempts to add to his seven career wins, the most recent three of which came in a purple patch during the summer of 2023, and with a more accomplished jockey at the reins, this might just be his chance to shine again at a decent each-way price.
