Sedgefield free racing tip: Mordred poised to build on recent near miss

We know the jumps season is properly under way when Sedgefield racecourse opens its gates, and this competitive two-mile chase should give National Hunt fans plenty of food for thought.

15:05 Sedgefield: Fairlight Studio Handicap Chase (2 miles 77 yards)

Market leader Tropical Talent carries the early favourite tag and is sure to have his fair share of backers, but our vote goes to Mordred, who is also gaining support in the betting after performing nicely for Harriet Dickin since switching from Milton Harris’ yard earlier this year.

The experienced eight-year-old arrives here on the back of a good performance three weeks ago at Newton Abbot, where he produced decent time figures to finish a close-up 2nd as a 16/1 shot .

He finished less than two lengths behind Dan Skelton’s highly-rated Beat Box, who has since gone on to win two more races by much larger margins and is unbeaten in four outings so far this season.

A versatile type, Mordred is equally at home on all-weather Flat tracks as he is tackling obstacles, and it’s worth noting that his last wins came back-to-back this time last year, firstly over hurdles at Plumpton and then over fences at this venue just nine days later.

Mordred remains on a good mark despite a 3lb rise in the weights that should be of little concern,  and he should make his presence felt in a race of this nature under the capable guidance of Ben Poste.

Suggested Bet: Mordred in the 15:05 at Sedgefield
