Newmarket free racing tips: Each-way options abound in Cambridgeshire cavalry charge

flat race at newmarket

After landing two Newmarket winners in two days, Tipstrr racing expert Steve Jones picks out his best bet Daily Bargain from the huge 35-runner field contesting the Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

15:40 Newmarket: Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Handicap (1 mile 1 furlong)

One of the early favourites for this big prize is This Songisforyou, one of the Irish raiders, whose position in the market owes much to his win in a premier handicap over 10 furlongs at the Curragh two weeks ago.

But on his previous run, in the valuable Colm Quinn BMW Mile at Galway, This Songisforyou finished a place behind Norwalk Havoc with the pair crossing the line in second and third of the 18 runners.

Norwalk Havoc finished 1½ lengths clear of This Songisforyou when receiving 2lbs, and today Jessica Harrington’s three-year-old still receives a pound from his big rival, and he is also better-suited to today’s conditions slower.

While This Songisforyou has never won on ground worse than good-yielding (two of his three wins were on good), Norwalk Havoc has recorded his two wins on soft and heavy.

Norwalk Havoc is also three years younger and much more lightly-raced than his rival, yet he is a significantly bigger price in the early markets.

Best Bet : Norwalk Havoc each-way in the 15:40 at Newmarket

But for the presence of the Listed-standard winner, Mexicali Rose, Norwalk Havoc would have won that valuable premier handicap comfortably and he is only 3lbs higher today.

Indeed, had that event taken place over this slightly longer trip, he probably would have won because he was gaining all the way to the line.

The same could be said about the ground conditions, which would have favoured Norwalk Havoc much more had they been as slow as today’s.

Only one rival (who is rated higher than any in this line-up) has been able to beat Norwalk Havoc in his three runs on soft or heavy ground, so the three-year-old has to be of serious interest on the back of his big Galway performance which came despite the ground being quicker than he would have wanted.

Of the others, Paddy The Squire looks capable of out-running his big early prices under these conditions.
Since returning from wind surgery in May last year, this four-year-old has recorded figures of 221223, with all his best runs coming over trips between 9-12 furlongs with cut in the ground.

His two best efforts have come at Hamilton, which is an undulating track with an uphill finish, so he has an ideal combination of conditions here and the fact that he stays further means he should be well-suited to a strongly-run nine furlongs, which this is likely to be.

The last eight winners of this prize were drawn higher than 20, so Norwalk Havoc is potentially well-berthed in stall 26, as is Paddy The Squire in stall 21, and with as many as eight each-way places up for grabs, they could both make the frame in this wide-open handicap.

Next Best Bet: Paddy The Squire each-way in the 15:40 at Newmarket
