Newbury free racing tip: Classy performer can convert near misses into overdue success

Newbury

Newbury presents a high-quality meeting on Friday afternoon, and there’s plenty of very capable seven-furlong sprinters fancying their chances of claiming the richest prize on the card.

16:05 Newbury: Dubai Duty Free Cup Stakes (7 furlongs)

Witch Hunter is a classy five-year-old who notched up the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and Newbury’s Hungerford Stakes in a lucrative 2023 campaign.

Richard Hannon’s gelding has suffered several near misses this term, but arrives in fine form after running well on his last three starts in valuable races.

He was last seen 13 days ago in a Group 3 race over a mile at Haydock, where he was narrowly beaten by Holloway Boy, who has also been running at the top of his game in high-class handicaps.

Prior to that, Witch Hunter was denied a successful defence of his Hungerford Stakes crown, when he was beaten by the width of Tiber Flow’s nostrils after a valiant but fruitless late charge.

Sean Levey has been on board Witch Hunter for most of his races, and the in-form jockey should be buoyed by steering two of his last four rides into the winner’s circle, following up last weekend’s memorable St Leger victory on Jan Brueghel with 13/2 shot Zip It Up for this yard at Kempton on Monday evening.

Suggested Bet: Witch Hunter in the 16:05 at Newbury
