Musselburgh each-way racing tip: Trends point to Digital for outsider value
Horse racing expert Andrew of Fiosrach was again employed his trends-based strategy to pick out his best bet from the World Pool Sprint Cup Handicap at Musselburgh on Saturday.
This five-furlong sprint is one of the top races to be run on Saturday and a field of fourteen is declared, which is slightly smaller than normal.
This is possibly due to the huge prize money available on Good Friday across several events.
Either way, we are still in for a competitive renewal with plenty of betting value across the entire betting market.
This left a shortlist of four horses: Makanah, The Bell Conductor, Digital and Water of Leith.
Makanah is a course and distance winner, but top weight and a record one success in 21 runs at this level led me to rule him out as the likely victor.
At the other end of the weight scale is
Water of Leith, who is running from one pound out of the handicap (one pound more than his official rating). His odds of 50/1 are probably an accurate view of his chances in this race, but his trainer is a shrewdie, especially with runners in Scotland. I think in this case, on all known form, it is unlikely that Water of Leith will lead the way in this one.
That has left a shortlist of two horses -
The Bell Conductor and
Digital. The Bell Conductor has superb form on all-weather tracks, but much less so on turf, where he has only managed to win one race in ten.
He does have place claims here and I would not be surprised if he is there or thereabouts at the finish. His trainer is especially good with sprinters and has won several big handicaps over the years.
Digital is a surprisingly big price for a horse that has won over course and distance and has won and placed at this level. Digital has also won off his current handicap mark so only has to replicate something he has already achieved to win this.
His trainer Roger Fell, won the consolation race at the Lincoln meeting last weekend with today's claimer Jonny Peate on board, so it would not be a total surprise if Digital has been aimed at this race.
He had a few runs in Bahrain over the winter, so should strip fitter than some of his rivals here.
Recommendation is a small each-way wager on
Digital, which is currently at a price I estimate to be double what he should be.
