Monday free racing tip: Best bet from Kempton’s all-weather meeting

Kempton Park racecourse 2024

There’s a decent all-weather card to enjoy at Kempton on Monday evening, and a couple of capable prospects have caught the eye of Tipstrr pundit Steve Jones in this one-mile handicap.

19:00 Kempton: Unibet More Boosts in More Bets Handicap (1 mile)

Four of these have either led or contested the pace at least once in their last three starts, so there is a fair chance of the kind of decent pace that would suit Willy Cambell as he steps down from 10 furlongs after racing keenly over the longer trip at Newcastle last time out.

Despite that, he still went close to winning an 11-runner 0-75 handicap, going down by just a neck to a previous 12½-furlong course winner, who just out-stayed him in the closing stages.

Prior to that, he was beaten by two useful three-year-olds as he finished third in a 0-75 over 10 furlongs at Chelmsford, where he came through to take third place, pulling almost three lengths clear of the fourth, who has since won a Class 5 handicap by an easy couple of lengths.

The winner of that Chelmsford handicap, Ashariba, has also boosted the form by winning a Class 4 around today’s track off a 6lb higher mark and she is now rated way ahead of today’s standard.

Best Bet: Willy Campbell in the 19:00 at Kempton

Clearly, Willy Campbell had little chance of beating such a well-handicapped and progressive filly as Ashariba whilst the Godolphin runner who finished second that day, Historic City, is also rated ahead of today’s opposition.

Willy Cambell has therefore produced some decent 10-furlong all-weather form on each of his last two starts, certainly in the context of today’s moderate handicap, and he can improve again racing off a stronger one-mile pace and with the standard-slow surface in his favour.

He showed that he can comfortably handle a decent one-mile pace around this track when going close to winning a novices’ stakes over this course and distance on his only visit so far, which came at exactly this time last year.

On that occasion, he finished very strongly, as would be expected of one who stays 10 furlongs, to get within half a length of the winner at the line.

On that evidence, Willy Campbell looks a good bet back over this course and distance in moderate Class 5 handicap company.

Of the others, Shelbourne was doing some good late work each time in his two most recent seven-furlong handicaps on polytrack, suggesting that a mile is well within range in this sphere.

That being the case, he is well worth considering given that he was a never-nearer third in a higher-graded Class 4 contest at Lingfield last month and is now 2lbs lower and running from a very handy stall 2 draw.

There is plenty of stamina on his dam’s side and she is closely related to a course specialist at this venue (whose regular rider just happened to be Callum Shepherd, who rides Shelbourne today).

Next best bet: Shelbourne in the 19:00 at Kempton
