Medina Spirit stripped of Kentucky Derby title and trainer Bob Baffert suspended
The winner of the 2021 Kentucky Derby, Medina Spirit, has been officially disqualified from the race and his trainer Bob Baffert suspended for 90 days and fined $7,500.
The colt, who died in December, ran out a half-length winner from Mandaloun at Churchill Downs in May last year, but it emerged a week later he had produced a positive test for the anti-inflammatory drug betamethasone, a prohibited substance in Kentucky on raceday.
Baffert has always strenuously denied any wrongdoing and pointed to an anti-fungal ointment prescribed for a case of dermatitis as being to blame.
Medina Spirit ran four more times after the Kentucky Derby, finishing third in the Preakness and runner-up to Knicks Go in the Breeders' Cup Classic. He also won the Grade One Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita.
