Limerick free racing tips: Gordon Elliott holds strong hand in stayers’ chase.
With the Flat season’s Ascot finale behind us, National Hunt racing takes centre stage at Limerick, where 19 runners will line up to contest the biggest prize on Limerick’s card.
15:50 Limerick: Boylesports JT McNamara Munster National Handicap Chase (3 miles)
Gordon Elliott has won this race twice in the last four years and of his seven runners in this field (including two of the reserves), by far the most interesting is Chemical Energy, who has his preferred conditions today, as well as the assistance of a very useful 7lbs claimer who rode the Ulster National winner for Elliott in April.
Chemical Energy’s six career wins have been achieved on good ground and his career figures on this type of surface are 1121115, so it is easy to forgive his latest run in soft conditions, and indeed, the eight-year-old has been unfortunate to have soft ground on all but one of his runs over the last two years.
Best Bet : Chemical Energy each-way in the 15:50 at Limerick
The exception was his penultimate start, at Galway at the end of July, when he finished a never-nearer 5th of 22 in the Galway Plate, a Grade 3 handicap over the shorter 22½-furlong trip.
Had that contest been over today’s three-mile trip, he would have finished much closer because he was gaining on the leaders in the closing stages after being slightly outpaced rounding the final bend.
Now a pound lower than at Galway, and effectively 8lbs lower after his useful rider’s claim, Chemical Energy will have a combination of three miles and decent ground for the first time since his last win at Cheltenham two years ago.
The stronger the pace the better for this strong-staying chaser, whose best-ever effort was his second of 10 in the 3¾-mile National Hunt Challenge Cup at Cheltenham last year, and with a full set of conditions in his favour for the first time in ages, Chemical Energy has another big run in him today.
