Hamilton free racing tips: Beraz can hit ground running for in-form yard

Hamilton racecourse

Hamilton racecourse bids farewell to the 2024 season with a tasty Monday afternoon card, from which this nine-furlong handicap promises to be one of the most competitive races of the day.

15:35 Hamilton: David Equi 60th Birthday Handicap (1 mile 1 furlong 35 yards)

The early favourite is Faylaq on the back of his win in the Mallard Handicap at Doncaster two weeks ago, but that was over 14½ furlongs and he looks vulnerable off 3lbs higher as he drops back significantly in distance to nine furlongs.

A much more attractive bet at the prices is Beraz, who comes here fresh from a break and represents a yard in great form (6/24 for 25% over the last two weeks).

Given the recent form of Julie Camacho’s string (two winners from the last three runners), there is a very good chance that Beraz will be ready to strike first-time back (he has won first time back from a break before and has a good record fresh).

His last win, which came at Leicester at this time last season, when he landed a 10-furlong 0-91 Class 3 handicap that featured six runners rated 87+, compared to only four in this race.

Best Bet : Beraz in the 15:35 at Hamilton

He ran off a mark of 88, so he is only a pound higher this time, and he won more comfortably than his three quarters of a length winning margin might suggest.

Beraz tried to follow-up his Leicester win at another uphill track the following month when he finished  third of 13 in a higher-graded Class 2 event at Newcastle.

He clearly likes these uphill tracks, and he has some very useful form at this venue too, having won a 1½-mile handicap here last July after going close in an 11-furlong handicap here last May.

He goes well fresh, the yard is in great form, and he is better class than this at his best, so a big run looks on the cards.

Of the others, Chaturanga is the only three-year-old in the field and he should go well on the back of his latest win at Ayr in late July.

He also arrives fresh, and he is already a Class 3 winner on an uphill track, having scored over 10 furlongs at Newcastle back in May (though that 0-84 event was more like a Class 4).

He has another career-high mark today, but he has a steadily progressive profile and there is surely more to come from him yet.

Returning jockey Hollie Doyle won on him at Ayr last time and his three turf wins have come on good ground, so these drying conditions work in his favour, although he will have to overcome the widest draw of all in stall 9.

Next Best Bet: Chaturanga in the 15:35 at Hamilton
