Goodwood free racing tip: Zealot looking to convert consistent form into overdue victory

Whenthedealinsdone won the World Pool Handicap at Glorious Goodwood under William Buick

The Flat season might be beginning to wind down, but there’s still plenty of top-quality racing to enjoy, including this competitive handicap in the last race of the afternoon card at Goodwood.

17:50 Goodwood: William Hill Handicap (1 mile 1 furlong)

Zealot comes here after four straight third-placed efforts, including last time out at this venue a month ago, when finishing just 3/4 of a length behind winner City of Delight (who was completing a hat-trick) and runner-up Hot Fuss, who has since franked that form with another decent showing in a Class 3 at Ascot.

Three weeks earlier,  Zealot had finished third again behind the short-priced favourite Solomon in receipt of weight for age and posting career-best efforts on only his second and third outings on turf.

The Michael Appleby-trained gelding now has less weight to carry tackle the same course and distance as last time, when he beat the market leader by three lengths, which surely stands him in good stead as a more fancied runner here.

Zealot is expected to run prominently and hopefully take all the catching on heavy going, on which he is untested, although he performed well on soft here last month.

Underestimated claimer Frederick Larson again brings his useful three-pound allowance to the saddle, and having landed two winners in his last five rides for Appleby, hopes are high that they can team up again with this in-form six-year-old.

Suggested Bet: Zealot in the 17:50 at Goodwood
