Doncaster free racing tip: All signs point to King's Lynn on return to favourite venue

The St Leger might be behind us, but there’s still plenty of racing to enjoy at Doncaster, not least this intriguing six-furlong handicap that might not go exactly as the way the bookies think.

16:15 Doncaster: Betfred “The Classic Bookmaker” Handicap (6½ furlongs)

King's Lynn arrives at the back end of a strong season that is still winless so far, but has seen him come close a few times in top-level class 2 races.

Last time out saw him take on seven furlongs for the first time at Goodwood three weeks ago, when he was beaten into fourth, but was less than three lengths behind the winner in a good performance given the unsuitable trip.

Three weeks earlier, Andrew Balding’s seven-year-old had finished a close-up third, just a nose and a neck behind winner Willem Twee (a proven all-weather performer) and Marine Wave in a 39k race at Wolverhampton.

Best Bet: King’s Lynn in the 16:15 at Doncaster

Before that, he had produced another great run to come 5th of 17 at Ascot, barely more than a length off the victorious Fair Wind, another highly-rated sprinter.

King’s Lynn boasts a very consistent profile at this level and comes back to Doncaster where he has two wins over this course and distance, albeit a couple of seasons ago.

The last time he was seen at Doncaster was when he ran a decent sixth place in last year’s Portland off 104, a mark that has since dropped considerably to a much more favourable 93 for Sunday’s race.

He is yet to land a handicap contest, but there’s a first time for everything and he comes here in good nick and with all the conditions in his favour, not least the booking of capable three-pound claimer William Carver.
