Catterick free racing tips: Drop in class can put overpriced filly in the frame

Catterick

The uncertain early market suggests that this 11-runner handicap is very much up for grabs, opening the door for some capable contenders beyond the favourite.

14:12 Catterick: Start Your RacingTV Free Trial Handicap (7 furlongs)

This is a significant drop in class for Catton Lady, who finished fifth of 10 in a 0-86 event at Redcar last time out- not strong at all for a Class 2, but significantly stronger than this 0-69 contest in which every one of her rivals is rated lower than all those she faced at Redcar.

She was racing over a longer-than-ideal mile that day, too, but on her penultimate run, she contested a handicap over thi’s seven-furlong trip at Carlisle, another stronger 074 race than today’s, in which she ran third 12 on soft ground.

She missed second place by just a neck behind a highly progressive winner, Myal, who has since won two successive Class 3 handicaps, beating a total of 23 rivals to complete a four-timer.

Best Bet: Catton Lady each-way in the 14:12 at Catterick

Catton Lady had very little chance of beating that classy winner, but she came within a neck of beating all the rest, six of whom were rated higher than today’s field.

Despite that big run in a stronger race, the three-year-old filly is a pound lower for this much less competitive race, which takes place over the same trip and on very similar ground.

In good form against better opposition than this, Catton Lady had also run very well over this trip at Thirsk on her seasonal debut, finishing third of nine in another stronger handicap, and having needed that run, she is down 5lbs to a career low mark, so she looks a good bet from a handy stall 2 draw.

Of the others, Mister Sox goes well at this specialist track, and he should go well again, despite finishing in midfield here last time.

That was in Class 4 company, but his previous three course figures were 112, with the third of those runs also coming over this trip in Class 4.

It is not hard to see him going well in a lower-tier Class 5 at this track, even though he is currently 5lbs above his top winning mark.
