Beverley free racing tips: Overpriced filly can defy odds in conditions set to suit

As the curtain begins to fall on the 2024 Flat campaign, Beverley racecourse signs off in style with this intriguing finale over an extended mile in the End Of Season Handicap.

17:37 Beverley: End Of Season Handicap (1 mile 100 yards)

The early market leader, Hardman, runs off a new career-high mark as he bids to complete a hat-trick, but with the favourite carrying an extra six pounds, a much better-value bet is the only previous course winner in the line-up, Ribble Radiant, who is now 13lbs lower than when she made her handicap debut this time last year.

Her career got off to a winning start when she landed a maiden over 7½ furlongs around this track last summer, with her three closest finishers from that race, whom she beat on level terms, all now rated higher than she is.

She began this season in a Class 3 off 76, and her five handicaps so far this term have all been in higher grade than this, but on return from her last break, at Doncaster last month, the filly produced a performance that was her best since that career debut success.

Best Bet : Ribble Radiant each-way in the 17:37 at Beverley

Her Doncaster run came in a stronger 0-70 handicap and she did comfortably the best of those who tried to come from well off the pace in a race dominated by prominent runners.

That handicap was a mile event and Ribble Radiant was doing her best work in the closing stages to finish a never-nearer  sixth of 11 and she would have finished significantly closer had she enjoyed anything like a clear run down the home straight.

She has had to endure unwanted cut in the ground on her two subsequent runs, so she is still waiting to take advantage of her return to form.

She gets her preferred going again today, as well as a drop in grade and a 5lb lower mark than she had at Doncaster, and today’s switch back to this uphill track also works in her favour, especially given the way in which she finished off her race on the flat track at Doncaster.

Under the yard’s main rider, David Allan, who rode her to win here on the filly’s career debut, Ribble Radiant now looks ready to strike again.

Of the others, Straight A is another well-handicapped runner with conditions in his favour. He was rated 77 at this time last year and he hasn’t been with Mick Appleby long.

Appleby is well-known for improving runners he acquires from other yards and the last time Straight A ran over a mile on turf, for his previous yard back in April, he finished a creditable fourth of 13 in a Class 5 at Doncaster when racing off 75.

That was on soft ground, but his winning form is on good-to-firm, so he is of definite interest down in Class 6 for the first time and racing off just 66 under these conditions.

Next Best Bet: Straight A each-way in the 17:37 at Beverley
