Rocket Mortgage Classic betting tips: Justin Thomas and Troy Merritt to be in the mix in Detroit

The Detroit Golf Club hosts the fifth Rocket Mortgage Classic and Tipstrr golf pundit Martin Colwell thinks Tony Finau could defend his crown, but sees more value in Justin Thomas and Troy Merritt.

There was a storm here on Sunday, which brought down a few trees and plenty of rain as well. But repairs should be completed before play starts. But it will make the course a bit wet and so easy to score on.

The fairways and greens are a bentgrass and poa mix. The greens are multi layered and undulate. The rough is bluegrass based.

The weather should be good during the tournament, mid-eighties and no wind. Strap yourself in for low scoring, which opens it up to most of the field.

The defending champion Tony Finau is joint favourite at 14/1, with Rickie Fowler and Collin Morikawa.

If the course suits a long hitter who can have a hot putting streak, then Tony fits the bill. Not in good form at present but this was part of his hot streak in 2022 and so this may rekindle his best stuff.

Rickie Fowler remains in great form without winning. In this weakened field he gets another chance to show that he is up to it.
Collin Morikawa missed the cut last week despite carding a 63 on Friday! What can we expect from him here?
Justin Thomas found some form last week and so his odds now drop to 18/1. JT does prefer easier courses and so this one is right up his street. But can he putt?

He shares this odds bracket with Hideki Matsuyama. Another golfer playing well without looking like winning.

Hideki has won before scoring low but that was a while ago pre his injury. 20/1 Bar.

Other golfers to consider at the Rocket Mortgage Classic

Last week's winner Keegan Bradley struck the ball beautifully then and putted like a god. He too can score very low on an easy course. But winning consecutive weeks? 28/1 available.
I then drop down to some outsiders who play this course well or are in form.
Zac Blair was runner up last week and yet we can find him at 190/1. He played beautifully last week and if he can sustain that type of game here, then he will go well.
Troy Merritt usually plays well here. Placed here twice in the past three years. 200/1 available.

Hank Lebioda was placed here in 2021 and now we can get him at 450/1.

Nate Lashley won here in 2019 breaking the course record. Davis Thompson then set a new low score in 2021.

I do not see either of them winning the tournament but they may be in the running for first round leader? At 90/1 and 110/1 they may be worth a go to do so.
