Open Championship tips: Local hero Tommy Fleetwood can lead the way with forgotten man Jon Rahm

In the betting minefield that is the 151st Open Championship, golf tipster Martin Colwell does his best to find where the best value can be found at the final Major of the season.

It was a gutting near miss for our selection last week as 100/1 shot Robert Macintyre was pipped by the brilliant Rory McIlroy on the last green in a dramatic finish at the Scottish Open.

The action now moves down to England for the fourth and final Major of 2023, with Royal Liverpool golf club at Hoylake hosting the 151st Open Championship.

The last two times this venue held the Open Championship were in 2014, when McIlroy won his fourth (and last, so far) Major, and in 2006 when Tiger Woods memorably triumphed without taking his driver out of his bag.

A par 71 and 7,383 yards in length, Hoylake is a traditional coastal links course that is unusual for being dead flat. Its main defence is the wind, but whether or not it blows, accuracy off the tee is key to avoid deep fairway bunkers and some dangerously placed out-of-bounds areas.

All odds stated are taken from Planet Sport Bet's eight-places market, although these prices could change by the time the tournament tees off.

Rory McIlroy follows on from his victory last week, so it makes sense that he is the early 7/1 favourite, as he also won his last Major at this course in 2014. But will he feel the pressure on Sunday as he tries to add to his tally after a nine-year wait?

Just behind him in the betting market is Scottie Scheffler at 15/2. Consistently the best golfer in the world in 2023, he comes to the Open boasting a remarkable record of eight straight top-five finishes, and only his close-but-no-cigar putting woes have prevented him from converting any of those into tournament wins.

Jon Rahm has been out of the picture since missing the cut at the Travelers Championship a month ago, and appears to have been somewhat overlooked in the betting. If he brings his A-game to Liverpool, then the Spanish world number two could well make a nonsense of his 14/1 price tag.

Suggested bet: Jon Rahm each-way to win the Open Championship
We then find the defending champion Cameron Smith at 18/1, whose odds might have been higher but for hitting form at just the right time to land the LIV tour event at London two weeks ago.

Tommy Fleetwood would be a popular winner on his home turf and he has an abundance of experience of links courses and conditions.

He has missed the cut in two of his last five tournaments, but has made the each-way frame in the other three, including at the US Open and at last weekend's Scottish edition.

The popular Englishman is in good form, and if he can get the putter to work, he can contend at 18/1.

Suggested bet: Tommy Fleetwood each-way to win the Open Championship
Ar 22/1 Brooks Koepka looks decent value for a five-time Major winner that includes this year's PGA Championship just a month after finishing runner-up at the Masters.

Viktor Hovland is another who likes to bring his best game to the big events, tying for fourth at St Andrews last year, and looking to bounce back from some mediocre finishes since winning the Memorial Tournament in early June.

Rickie Fowler was runner up in 2014 on this course, but struggled in the Scottish wind last weekend and looks vulnerable at 18/1.
However, his game is right back on track and he finally got back to winning ways at the Rocket Mortgage Classic a couple of weeks ago after a five-year winless hiatus.
Catching the eye at 45/1 is fellow-American Sam Burns, who has strung some decent results together this season, including the World Match Play event in March.

Burns was ticking along nicely in Scotland last week until a bunker wall and the resultant triple bogey affected his momentum and his chances, ultimately knocking him down into 19th= after he had looked in good form.

Suggested bet: Sam Burns each-way to win the Open Championship
