Omega European Masters betting tips: Matt Fitzpatrick primed to dominate, Nick Bachem ready to shine
The DP World Tour visits the Swiss Alps for the Omega European Masters, with golf pundit Martin Colwell hoping to follow up his success in backing Viktor Hovland in last weekend's Tour Championship.
The picturesque Crans-Sur-Sierre golf club in Crans Montana will be the last chance for those golfers in contention to impress European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald.
Distance on this relatively short 6,808-yard par-70 tree-lined course will be less of a factor than accuracy on approach to the tiny greens that are well protected by bunkers and shaved run-off areas.
Thriston Lawrence is the defending champion this week, but unsurprisingly it is
Matt Fitzpatrick
, a two-time winner of this tournament in the past, who heads the betting at 8/1, and is likely to be lining up this event as a pre-Ryder Cup tune up on a course at which he obviously excels.
Fitzpatrick is rated eighth in the world rankings and indeed is the only player in the world's top fifty to be in Switzerland this week, so we can expect a polished performance from the 2022 US Open champion.
Suggested bet:
Matt Fitzpatrick to win the Omega European Masters
Such is the strength of Fitzy's favouritism, that is a big leap to the 16/1 second favourite in the shape of the young Swedish sensation, Lucas Aberg, who showed up well enough last week in Prague but may well be being hyped up too much at present.
A tad further out on 18/1 is Danish star Nicolai Hojgaard, who had plenty of chances to grab the Czech maters by the scruff of the neck last week, but just could not get it done, eventually settling for third.
On the same mark is Adrian Meronk, who let our top tip down last week and could do with a good show this weekend to cement a spot in the Ryder Cup, especially as he won the Italian Open at the Marco Simone venue back in May.
Others to consider
Robert MacIntyre is another Ryder Cup contender who could do with a good week, but he might come up short on a course that is unlikely to suit his aggressive style, and his 22/1 price seems a fair reflection of that, despite his good recent form.
A more preferable option at similar odds appears to be
Matt Wallace
, who could count himself unlucky to have been leapfrogged by Todd Clements' final-round 62 in Prague last week.
Lacing good form with inconsistency, Wallace may feel that he needs at least another top-two finish here to make a blip on Donald's Ryder Cup radar.
Suggested bet:
Matt Wallace each-way in the Omega European Masters
Rasmus Hojgaard
was decent if unspectacular to finish 12 shots off the pace at the Czech Masters, but I am also willing to give the Dane another chance this week.
A previous winner of this tournament, he will be on a course that suits him better, and his 25/1 tag looks good each-way value for another played looking to catch the Ryder Cup captain's eye.
Looking further still down the betting, Yannik Paul is always capable of putting himself in contention and the German looks appealing at 40/1. Alex Fitzpatrick is also playing better than his 50/1 odds might suggest, while the defending champion, Thriston Lawrence obviously enters calculations at 66/1.
Last but not least, and the pick of my outsiders at 100/1, is the young German
Nick Bachem
, who made a quick impact in his first season on Tour to win the Jonsson Workwear Open in South Africa six months ago.
As a rookie he has understandably missed his fair share of cuts since, but a fourth-placed finish last week was another top performance from a player who is fifth for strokes gained off the tee this season.
Suggested bet:
Nick Bachem each-way in the Omega European Masters
