DP World Tour Championship tips: Tom Kim can continue top form to challenge Europe’s big three

Tom Kim of South Korea leads

As Europe’s biggest names gather in Dubai for the DP World Tour Championship, golf pundit Martin Colwell has been looking at where the best betting value might lie in such a high-class field.

With a total purse of $10 million and places on the 2024 USPGA Tour up for grabs, there will be plenty at stake for this top-class field, and with no half-way cut it will be a wide open tournament throughout the entire weekend.

The Earth Course is a par-72 and at 7,675 yards in length it should suit longer drivers who can make the most of the par fives, which certainly would appear to enhance the chances of multiple winner on this course, Rory McIlroy, who heads the betting at 4/1, and will fancy his chances on a course he loves.

Another multiple winner here is Jon Rahm, who has not been playing that much recently and was a somewhat disappointing ninth last time out in the Spanish Open. Rahmbo is a point better at 5/1 and has the game to excel on this track.

Suggested bet: Jon Rahm to win the DP World Tour Championship

Close on the two heavyweight’s heels is Viktor Hovland, who is the marginal outsider of the big three at 11/2. Some say that the young Norwegian is the best player in the world currently, and he will have to be on top of his game to prove it this week.

The list of multi-winners on the Earth Course continues in the form of Matt Fitzpatrick, whose 12/1 price opens the door for some potential each way value. There are no issues with Fitz knowing how to play this course and being good each-way value, but it’s worth noting that this reduced field has led to most bookmakers offering no more than six places.

Tyrrell Hatton looks quite tasty at 12/1 on a course that should suit his game until we remember that he has failed to convert any of his good recent performances into an overdue victory.

Tommy Fleetwood completes a tasty-looking English trio on that same 12/1 mark, at which point we drift out to the fast-improving Min Woo Lee at 16/1. Lee has two top-20 finishes at this course and is in good form after winning in Macau recently and finishing sixth in the Zozo Championship in Japan.

Catching the eye in a big way on this course is Tom Kim, who never seems far from the pace and is a player who loves to show what he can do in a big event.

Kim has only finished outside the top 20 once in his last eight starts (and that was 24th at the St Jude), was runner-up at the Open and won impressively at the Shriners Children’s Open last month.

If the Korean star can bring that recent form to the United Arab Emirates then he looks a snip at 16/1.

Suggested bet: Tom Kim each-way in the DP World Tour Championship

Of those down the betting market, Adrian Meronk catches the eye after winning recently in Spain. The Pole is based in Dubai in the winter months, so he would have played this course on many occasions, so 25/1 gives punters some each-way perspective.

Ryo Hisatsune continues to defy high odds in achieving top ten finishes on tour, and although he is up against the big boys this week, his game is in good shape at present, and 60/1 is a fair reflection of value here.

Last but not least, we should not overlook Jorge Campillo, who is a three-time winner on tour, including a victory and four top ten finishes on tour in 2023. He was narrowly beaten in the Qatar Masters recently, played well last week in South Africa and has two top ten finishes on this course, so looks worth a cautious dabble at 75/1.

Suggested bet: Jorge Campillo each-way in the DP World Tour Championship

Summary of suggested bets:

  • Jon Rahm, 6 points win at 5/1
  • Tom (Jooyung) Kim, 1.5 points each-way at 16/1
  • Jorge Campillo, 0.5 points each-way at 75/1
