Wyndham Clark admits besting Rory McIlroy at Ryder Cup a source of motivation for him
US Open champion Wyndham Clark believes he is a better player than Rory McIlroy and wants to prove it at the Ryder Cup later this month.
Clark edged out McIlroy to win his first major title at Los Angeles Country Club in June and earn his place on the United States team which will defend the Ryder Cup in Rome.
And the 29-year-old would love to face McIlroy in a true match-play scenario at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club next week.
Asked on Golf Channel's "Golf Today" programme about the chance of facing McIlroy, Clark said: "That's exactly who I want. I'd love to play Rory.
"I mean, I have the utmost respect for Rory. I mean, he's one of our great ambassadors of our game, he's obviously one of the best of all time and his career is still going.
"I have tons of respect for Rory. Because of that respect, I also want to beat him. I like to think I am better than him, and I want to prove that.
"I think it would be a little bit of David and Goliath, and I'm hoping I get that chance."
