Scottie Scheffler choosing fun over legacy at the Masters
World number one Scottie Scheffler says "legacy is complicated" and that fun is more of a motivating factor for him as he attempts to defend his Masters title this weekend.
Despite the Masters having the smallest field of any of the four majors and being the only one played on the same course every year, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods are the only players to have won back-to-back titles.
Scheffler will attempt to join that exclusive club at Augusta National this week and is joint favourite with Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm after two wins this season, including the prestigious Players Championship.
"Legacy at the end of this is not really why I play," Scheffler said.
"With that being said, any time you can get mentioned in the same breath as a Tiger and a Jack and a Nick Faldo is really special, but it's not a motivating factor for me to come out here and play.
"It's so special and cool when it happens, but it doesn't motivate me out here. I'm just trying to come out here and do my best and play good golf and have fun.
"Outside of that, I'm just hoping to have a good attitude and…do the best that I can do, and wherever that ends up in my career, I'll be happy with.
"Legacy is a complicated thing. In 100 years I'm going to be forgotten and it's not a big deal."
