Open Championship each-way bets: Five long shots to follow at Royal Liverpool

Brian Harman

With 156 players lining up for the Open, one or more outsiders could defy their odds to put themselves in contention. Tipstrr golf pundit Brendan Skilling has picked out a few (un)likely contenders.

The Open is undoubtedly the Major Championship that produces the most variance in winners with several unheralded, unfancied and even unknown winners over the years!
Ben Curtis, Todd Hamilton, Darren Clarke and Stewart Cink all lifted the Claret Jug at huge prices and there is a plethora of players among the 156-strong field who fit a similar under-the-radar profile.

With Planet Sport Bet offering a juicy eight each-way places this week at Royal Liverpool, there's plenty of value to be had further down the market.

Brian Harman

Harman arrives here with form of 2-9-12 including last week's Scottish Open warm up where he ranked as the third most accurate driver in a high-class field.

His lack of length is less of a worry this week as many of the bigger hitters will be clubbing down to avoid trouble. Add this to his Open form of 19-6 in his last two attempts and it's easy to see how Harman fits into dark horse territory.

Suggested bet: Brian Harman each-way to win the Open Championship

Padraig Harrington

The veteran Irishman is enjoying a career renaissance as he continues to mix it with players half his age on the DP and PGA Tours' alongside racking up wins on the Senior circuit.

He opened with rounds of 66 and 67 at the Scottish Open last week and is undoubtedly one of the great links players of the past 20 years. Could he lift an incredible third Claret Jug?

Sepp Straka

The big Austrian is another chasing a Ryder Cup spot and arrives here after winning his last outing at the John Deere Classic where he came close to breaking 60 in his final round.

His links record is nothing to shout about, but he does perform well on narrow driving courses on the PGA Tour where accuracy is key, such as Harbour Town and PGA National.
Suggested bet: Sepp Straka each-way to win the Open Championship

Alex Noren

At prices approaching 200/1, the Swede is seriously underrated this week.

Despite some patchy form he has a couple of top 20's in the last month and must know that time is running out to impress European Ryder Cup Captain Luke Donald.

He has a phenomenal record in the UK and on links courses with five Open top 10's and a Scottish Open victory.

Matthew Jordan

Finally, for the romantics there's local lad Matthew Jordan who hails from the Wirral just down the road from Hoylake, so alongside another local Tommy Fleetwood, he'll have the support of the galleries this week.

He's a member here with all the local knowledge needed to plot his way around and arrives after three rounds in the 60's last week in Scotland and a steady run of top 20 finishes on the DP World Tour.

Suggested bet: Matthew Jordan each-way to win the Open Championship
