Matthew Jordan still in contention despite tough conditions at The Open

Matthew Jordan

Matthew Jordan stayed within reach of the leaders at the Open on Saturday as he fought admirably with the elements, evoking memories of last year's performance at Hoylake.

The 28-year-old earned his place in the field for this week's championship at Royal Troon courtesy of his top-10 finish at his home club, Royal Liverpool, 12 months ago.

And in conditions not dissimilar to the rain-lashed final day on Merseyside, Jordan held firm to shoot a third successive 71 and sit on a respectable level par heading into Sunday's final round.

Jordan said: "Everyone says, 'You are used to this' or, 'Do you enjoy it?'

"Not really! I don't think anyone enjoys this.

"I guess, yes, maybe being a bit more used to it does help, but I would much prefer it to be nice and sunny, just a bit of breeze, and we all just play from there really.

"I was trying to think if it was worse or better (than Hoylake) and I think it was probably a bit worse, but very similar.

"It was just hard work. We were just drenched from start to finish. We did well to keep as dry as we were."

With the weather affecting the later starters more than those who played earlier, the leaderboard has been condensed, potentially bringing the likes of Jordan into contention.

Jordan, whose third round mixed four birdies with four bogeys, said: "My goal tomorrow will be to start well and play the first few holes as well as I can, and we'll see what happens from there."
