Lucas Glover holds slender lead at Barbasol Championship
Lucas Glover has a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Barbasol Championship on Thursday.
Lucas Glover is lovinhg life on the greens with his new broomstick...
Teeing off for the first time at Keene Trace Golf Club in Kentucky, the American signed for a sizzling nine-under 63, enough for a one-shot lead over fellow PGA Tour veterans Ryan Moore and Ryan Armour.
Glover near flawless round featured six birdies on the front nine, with a solitary bogey on the par-four fourth his only blemish. Coming home, he holed out from 138 yards to eagle the 12th before draining birdie putts on the 15th and 16th.
Key to Glover's success has been a new putter. After missing the cut at the Travelers Championship, he switched to the old broomstick putter. It's been glowing red hot since, helping the four-time PGA Tour winner to a T4 finish at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and a T6 at last week's John Deere Classic.
"Just got confidence in the putting and making some of those mid-range putts and very comfortable over the short ones again," the 43-year-old told
ESPN after his round.
"There hasn't been until recently a lot of low rounds, but I've always liked this time of year and this stretch. Getting hot at the right time, and 63 anytime anywhere is pretty good. I'll take 'em."
"Anytime you're putting well it takes pressure off the rest of your game. You don't feel so much pressure to hit it perfect, which is not possible."
Further down the leaderboard, Daniel Brown, Wesley Bryan, Cody Gribble and Andrew Novak each shot 65 to sit at seven under.
