Justin Suh leads ZOZO Championship as Collin Morikawa surges after grandstand finish
American Justin Suh will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the PGA Tour's ZOZO Championship in Japan as he targets a breakthrough victory on the American circuit.
Suh, who won last year's Korn Ferry Tour Championship to earn full status on the PGA Tour, started the round one-shot off Beau Hossler's lead, but a three-under-par 67 was enough to see him take over at the top at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Chiba.
The 26-year-old picked up three birdies in a bogey-free front nine but then dropped a shot at the 10th.
Further birdies at 13 and 16 saw Suh take to the top of the leaderboard, and though he closed with a disappointing bogey at the last, it was still good enough for a one-shot lead over Hossler and Eric Cole.
"I think the experience of the Korn Ferry Tour was huge and I think throughout this year I've put myself in this position a few times in some big tournaments," Suh said. "Every week you put yourself in this position you learn a little more."
Cole is another player chasing his first PGA Tour win after narrowly missing out to Chris Kirk in a play-off at the Honda Classic earlier this year. The 35-year-old mixed four birdies and two bogeys in his 66 to share second place with Hossler, who stayed in touch with a an up-and-down one-under 69.
"A lot of times, everyone's so good out here, it seems like you have to play perfect. Most of the time, in my experience, if you just stick to your game and play solid, you'll have at least a chance," Cole said of his gameplan for Sunday.
Also making a move on Saturday was first-round leader Collin Morikawa, who fell off the pace in the second round with a 73 but bounced right back on Saturday with a four-under 66 to lie just two shots off the lead in solo fourth.
Morikawa had a wild day that started with a double-bogey six at the first and another dropped shot at the fourth. But the former PGA Championship winner picked up three straight birdies from the sixth to erase all his losses and then bounced back from another bogey at the 12 with a grandstand finish, making four straight birdies from the 13th before adding another at the 18th for good measure to sign for an extraordinary 66.
Argentina's Emiliano Grillo shares fifth place on six under, just three off the pace, with local favourite Satoshi Kodaira, after rounds of 68 and 69 respectively.
Kurt Kitayama made the day's biggest move with a 64 to move into solo seventh place on five under, four back.
