Jason Day and Lydia Ko team up to win Grant Thornton Invitational
Former world number one's Jason Day and Lydia Ko won the inaugural Grant Thornton Invitational by one stroke on Sunday.
In a first-ever coming together of the PGA Tour and LPGA, the tournament saw mixed teams of two taking on each other for the $4 million purse at the Tiburon Golf Club in Naples.
Ko and Day's final, round of 66 was enough to move them to 26 under and see them edge the Canadian paring of Brooke Henderson and Corey Conners, who threatened with a combined 63 on Sunday to finish solo second.
The tournament-winning play came on the par 5 17th, where Day found the fairway with his drive, setting up Ko for a sizzling three-wood that rolled to 15 feet of the hole.
"It felt like the most stress-free win," Day joked on pgatour.com after the final putt.
"I just knew she would step up in the end, which was fantastic"
Meanwhile, Ko hoped the action inspired children to try golf.
"I hope a lot of juniors who are either here or watching on the TV get inspired," said the Australian.
