Former Ryder Cup captain calls Phil Mickelson one of the most 'disappointing figures' in golf

Phil Mickelson confirms LIV Golf Invitational Series debut

The hits keep coming for the beleaguered American, with former Ryder Cup captain Lanny Wadkins the latest to pile on.

Former Ryder Cup USA captain Lanny Wadkins is the latest figure to express his disappointment with Phil Mickelson, following the bombshell betting allegations revealed in a new book.

Mickelson has become the figure many golf fans love to hate, from being LIV Golf's most vocal early cheerleader, to his constant Twitter spats, and now the bombshell revelations of his gambling past, which include extraordinary claims that the American's apparent gambling addiction has led to a total of more than $1 billion in bets, and that he even tried to bet on the 2012 Ryder Cup while playing for Team USA (albeit that they would win the tournament, not lose it).

The revelations about Mickelson's out-of-control gambling surfaced last week with the release of a book by famous gambler Billy Walters, and while he has denied the claim about the Ryder Cup, Wadkins doesn't seem to be buying it.

"I don't know that there's ever been a more disappointing figure in golf than Phil Mickelson," said Wadkins, who captained Mickelson in the 1995 Ryder Cup at Oak Hill, which was won by the Europeans.

"He was a beloved figure for a long time. We all marveled at the way he could play. But just nothing looks kosher about what he's doing these days."

If there was any doubt before, this latest revelation makes it almost certain that Mickelson will not play a part in the Ryder Cup again.

"It's really kind of a shame. He's just self-imploded and looks like he just continues to at every turn," Wadkins added.
"It's disappointing and sad. It's sad that we have people in our game that think they're bigger than the game and obviously Phil thinks he's bigger."
Last week, Rory McIlroy also took pointed aim at Mickelson when asked to respond to the claim he bet on the Ryder Cup while playing in it.
"At least he can bet on the Ryder Cup this year, because he won't be a part of it."
