DP World Tour: Matthieu Pavon seizes early lead in Acciona Open de España
Matthieu Pavon took command of the Acciona Open de España by storming ahead with an opening round of 63 at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.
The French golfer's solid performance places him atop the leaderboard, setting the stage for an intriguing quest for his inaugural DP World Tour title.
Pavon's flawless round, earning him a score of eight under, placed him firmly in the lead, one shot ahead of the Dutch contender, Wil Besseling. Close on Besseling's heels were fellow countryman Mike Lorenzo-Vera, Portuguese ace Pedro Figueiredo, and England's Eddie Pepperell, each harboring aspirations to conclude the season with a flourish, securing their coveted playing privileges.
Meanwhile, the defending champion, Jon Rahm, who aims to clinch his fourth victory in the last five editions of this event, finds himself trailing by four strokes after an impressive round of 67.
Pavon's journey to this pivotal moment has been marked by unwavering consistency. A two-time champion on the Alps Tour, he earned his DP World Tour card by finishing as a runner-up three times on the European Challenge Tour in 2016. His second-place finish in Spain during the previous season was his third top-tier DP World Tour career performance.
Pavon's brilliant performance commenced with a 31-foot putt on the first hole, setting the tone for his round. A two-putt gain on the par-five fourth and an exquisite hole-out from the fringe on the sixth fuelled his momentum. A precision tee-shot on the ninth that landed five feet from the pin saw him make the turn at 32. Although a misstep on the tenth resulted in his sole bogey of the day, he rebounded with a eagle on the 14th, facilitated by superb approach shots on the 12th and 15th holes. A tee-shot landing just three feet from the cup on the par-three 17th secured his seventh birdie of the day, and a deft bunker shot on the final hole clinched a closing par.
Wil Besseling, who turned in 32 with three birdies from the back nine, appeared to be a distant contender early on. However, a two-putt birdie on the fourth hole ignited his momentum, and he continued his ascent with a lengthy putt on the fifth. His precision approach on the sixth and another two-putt gain on the seventh propelled him up the leaderboard.
Eddie Pepperell delivered a notable performance with an eagle and a solitary bogey in his round of 65, featuring five birdies. In contrast, both Mike Lorenzo-Vera and Pedro Figueiredo dropped a single shot, keeping them firmly in contention.
Several other contenders, including Ross Fisher, Nathan Kimsey, Deon Germishuys, Zander Lombard, Victor Garcia Broto, Calum Hill, Romain Langasque, Joost Luiten, Tapio Pulkkanen, Shubhankar Sharma, and Marcel Siem, find themselves within striking distance, all trailing the leader by just three strokes.
