Cameron Young, Eric Cole, Davis Thompson tied for lead at wet RSM Classic
It's tight at the top of the RSM Classic leaderboard after a weather-affected round finished in darkness on Thursday.
Two rain delays saw nearly four hours of play lost, meaning only 65 players out of the 156-strong field managed to finish their rounds. Such was the deluge that pools began to form on the greens and the bunkers of at Seal Island Golf Club.
Nonetheless, the American trio of Young, Cole and Thompson would each card six under 66s to lead the field. PGA Tour veteran Matt Kuchhar signed for a five under 65, while Nicholas Lindhiem is also five under but still has five holes to play.
Reflecting on the challenging conditions, Young recollected his arduous journey down the par five fourth hole.
"It's already like 625 or something and I hit about as good a drive as I can and about the best 3-iron I could have to still have like 125 yards in, which doesn't happen all that often," explained Young on pgatour.com.
"That hole was playing about 750 probably."
The RSM Classic is played over the Seaside and Plantation courses and Scotland's Russell Knox was one of the early starters on the former, finishing four under. While some are chasing silverware in Georgia, Knox is chasing his PGA Tour card. He is ranked 154 in the FedEx Cup, with only the top 1325 getting full PGA Tour cards for next year.
"I've joked with my family, like 80% of the time I'm a world-class player, the other 20% of the time I'm a 20-handicap," quipped Knox, who has missed 12 cuts this year.
"Those moments are killing me. I drove the ball the worst I've ever driven it this year and that's the reason why I'm in the position I'm in. The rest of my game has been pretty good, to be honest.
"So it's been difficult, but at the same time it's not supposed to be easy, right?"
