Beau Hossler goes low to lead Wyndham Championship before darkness halts play
American Beau Hossler carded a stellar 10 under 60 to take a two shot lead at the Wyndham Championship before first round play was suspended due to darkness.
Tropical Storm Debby has wreaked havoc across the opening two days of the tournament at Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina, with Thursday's expected start of the event pushed back, and Friday's play ending with 66 players yet to finish their round.
Hossler appeared undeterred by the weather delay, opening his round with four straight birdies and an eagle, with a bogey on the par four 11th hole the only blemish on his scorecard.
"I drove it well and particularly probably the highlight of the round was just mid-irons," Hossler said. "A few 6-irons I hit really close, 5-iron I almost made a hole-in-one. It was one of those days where it felt like kind of everything went right."
"This course has not treated me particularly well in the past, so I was just coming here and trying to play as well as I could and see what I got," he added.
He leads by two from fellow American Billy Horschel, who still has two holes left of his first round to complete.
"If you can put the ball in the fairway, which has always been the case here, you can be aggressive," Horschel said. "Especially, with soft conditions, that makes it even more important to have the ball in the fairway."
England's Ben Taylor is four shots back on six under after seven birdies on the front nine were slightly undone by two dropped shots on the trip home.
A statement from the PGA Tour said first round play is scheduled to resume at 7am on Saturday, with the second round expected to commence at 7.40am.
The Wyndham Championship is the final event of the PGA Tour's regular season, with the top 70 in the standings at the tournament's end advancing to the FedEx Cup play-offs.
