Adrian Meronk bounces back from Ryder Cup snub with Andalucia Masters victory

Adrian Meronk wins Andalucia Masters 2023

After missing out on Ryder Cup selection, Adrian Meronk proved his doubters wrong with a narrow win at the Andalucia Masters in Spain on Sunday.

The Pole shot a final-round 66, which featured eagles at both the sixth and ninth holes, to finish 16 under par and beat Germany's Matti Schmid by one stroke.

Meronk was overlooked when Europe captain Luke Donald last month named his picks for the tournament against the United States, which the hosts won 16.5-11.5 in Rome.

Asked if he had answered any doubters, Meronk said: "I hope so. I'm just glad the Ryder Cup and all the talk about it is over, I can just focus on my game.

"Whoever doubted me, I hope I can prove them wrong."

Meronk was two over for Sunday's first three holes at Real Club de Golf Sotogrande – where play was brought forward to avoid forecast storms later in the day – but responded with the two eagles and added four birdies on a nerveless back nine.

Schmid led for much of the day but bogeyed the 16th and was just unable to hole a long birdie putt at the last which would have earned a play-off. England’s Richard Mansell finished a shot further back in third at 14 under.
