IPL preview: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Mumbai Indians - prediction, stars to watch and suggested bets

Sunrisers Hyderabad player Kane Williamson

The Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians weathered losing starts to the 2023 Indian Premier League, but have since each gathered successive victories.

Who, when, where

Sunrisers Hyderabad v Mumbai Indians, 3pm BST, Tuesday 18 April 2023, Hyderabad

Talking points

The Sunrisers will go into this match on the back of a convincing win over the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, where Marco Jansen and Mayank Markende starred with the ball. This success between seam and spin could work again.
Hyderabad bowled 14 overs of seam against the Knight Riders, but the same isn't likely in conditions that'll probably suit more spin this time. It'll be interesting to see if they retain the same bowling attack - or perhaps rotate fast bowler Umran Malik.
The Mumbai Indians are the most successful team in the history of the IPL with five titles, but they finished in last position in 2022 and have struggled to get going in 2023. They have momentum, though, on the back of two wins in a row now.
Their most recent win was also over KKR. Spinner Rakesh Shokeen impressed before several solid performances with the bat, including a half-century from opener Ishan Kishan, finished the job against the two-time title holders. Mumbai would like more of the same here.

Head-to-head

Mumbai and Hyderabad have all but taken turns beating each other in their last five meetings. Mumbai have three wins to Hyderabad's two.

Stars to watch

The son of former India captain Sachin Tendulkar, Arjun, debuted for the Mumbai Indians recently. He put in two wicketless overs and was rather costly, but he'll likely get another go. Tendulkar junior can be a real threat with the new ball in particular.

Harry Book hit a maiden IPL century recently to answer critics who were getting louder with each failure. The Sunrisers should open the batting with him again and have captain Aiden Markram a bit lower down.

Prediction

The Mumbai Indians are looking in the strongest shape to win here. Both teams are in fine form, but the five-time champions have the edge. This should particularly be the case if captain Rohit Sharma fires with the bat.
