Skye Nicolson backed to become world champion within a year by fellow Matchroom contender

Sky Nicolson

Skye Nicolson recently improved her professional record to 7-0.

Skye Nicolson has the ability to become a world champion within the next 12 months according to Maisey Rose Courtney.

Nicolson improved her professional record to 7-0 back in April with a points victory over Linda Laura Lecca in Cardiff.

That was the featherweight's second outing in 2023 as she continues to remain active under the Matchroom banner.

Nicolson recently revealed to Boxing Social that she has been ordered to fight for the WBC interim title.

While the Aussie's next bout is yet to be confirmed, fellow Matchroom contender Maisey Rose Courtney is looking forward to seeing the 27-year-old back in action.

Courtney told Planet Sport: "There's a lot of good people out there at the minute, there's a lot of good prospects.

"Skye Nicholson is one of them, even though she is one of my good mates. I love watching her box, she's proper talented.

"All the people down at the Matchroom gym, it's exciting to watch them because they're my friends and then I see them in there excelling and beating someone up. That's what I love to watch."

When asked how far Nicolson can go, Courtney added: "The whole way. She's got the most awkward style that you could ever think of.

"I think she will be a world champion easily within a year's time, if not a two-time world champion. I'm not just saying that because she is my mate. I do truly believe in her. She's grafting hard, she works hard, and she'll definitely do it."

Back in February, Nicolson told Boxing News she is up for a future fight with current featherweight undisputed champion Amanda Serrano.

While the Australian plots her way to the top of the division, Courtney is currently forging her way forward in the flyweight ranks.
The Brit will take on Kate Radomska in her third professional outing on May 20 - a bout which will feature on the undercard of Katie Taylor's homecoming fight against Chantelle Cameron.
When asked about her friendship with Nicolson, Courtney said: "In boxing it's very difficult to be able to find someone who you can call a friend.
"I've never boxed Skye, we're not the same weight. But it's really easy for people to turn their back on you [in boxing]. Stab you in the back and things like that.
"I'm very lucky to have found someone that I trust in boxing. Someone that can beat me up and I can beat her up and there's no hard feelings. Then we'll go to Lakeside afterwards and buy a pair of trainers. Very lucky to have Skye as my mate."

Fans can catch Courtney's latest bout, and the full event, live on DAZN on May 20 from Dublin.
