Rolando Romero claims WBA junior welterweight title in controversial circumstances
Rolando "Rolly" Romero was awarded the WBA junior welterweight title after a bizarre ninth-round stoppage by referee Tony Weeks.
Romero was fighting Number 1 contender Ismael Barroso for the title, which was only the case because Alberto Puello was forced to withdraw after failing a performance-enhancing drugs test.
The drug is generally prescribed to women suffering from fertility issues but male athletes can also use it to artificially increase their testosterone levels.
"I'm disappointed I don't get to whup his ass," Romero told BoxingScene.com. "But more than anything, I'm happy that he got caught. That's what he gets for being a piece of sh!t."
Romero also went on to claim its use is rife in boxing.
"I know a lotta these people are on that sh!t," Romero said.
"I ain't that kinda person [to name names], but a lot of these motherf----- on that sh!t. I think it's f------ disgusting. It takes away from boxing being legit. It's sad."
Puello was replaced by Number 1 contender Ismael Barroso and the fight went nine rounds before it was controversially stopped by referee Tony Weeks in the ninth round when Barroso was knocked to the floor, handing Romero the win in a fight he appeared to be losing badly.
Even Romero thought the fight should have been allowed to continue.
"I'm gonna be honest, he's a warrior, he wanted to keep going, he should have been able to keep going. We both wanted it to keep going," Romero said.
"I came in a little cold, I got cracked, and I finished the round like a champion. I kept going and got the victory.
"I took my time, moved around. The man's strong, man. I had to be careful with him.
"You think I want to get caught by one of (his punches)? I told you he can crack. I told everyone he can crack."
