Lennox Lewis weighs in on Mike Tyson and Jake Paul showdown – ‘I don’t want him to get hurt’
Lennox Lewis revealed he is excited to see his old rival Mike Tyson back in the ring as the former heavyweight champion prepares to take on YouTuber-turned boxer Jake Paul.
Tyson and Paul took the world by storm after announcing their blockbuster fight at the AT&T Stadium in Texas on July 20.
With the fight available to all Netflix account holders, many are expecting this to be one of the most-watched bouts in history.
Many fighters have expressed their concern ahead of the clash, with Tyson set to turn 58 years old before the encounter.
Jake Paul, who will be 31 years his junior, may not be an elite level boxer though he has defeated MMA legends such as Nate Diaz, Anderson Silva and Tyron Woodley.
Iron Mike last boxed in November 2020 when he took on former four-division world champion Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition.
Tyson’s last competitive outing took place back in June 2005 when he lost in the sixth round to Irishman Kevin McBride.
Just three years prior, Iron Mike shared the ring with Lennox Lewis in a blockbuster showdown for the WBC, IBF, IBO and The Ring Magazine heavyweight titles.
Tyson, who was far from his prime, ended up on the wrong end of an eighth-round knockout defeat.
Lewis knows all about his former rival but remains optimistic about his chances despite the age gap.
“It’s going to be a great fight,” Lewis told TMZ Sports.
The British boxing legend believes that Paul should be thankful over the fact this is only an exhibition and not a professional bout.
When asked whether he wished this was a sanctioned bout, he added: “No. I would feel really bad for Jake Paul. I don't want him to get hurt."
