Jordan Gill opens up about mental health struggles after losing European title
Jordan Gill revealed he was struggling to cope and even contemplated suicide after he lost the European title to Kiko Martinez.
The Huntingdon boxer was speaking after completing a surprise seventh-round stoppage win over home favourite Michael Conlan in Belfast on Saturday night.
Gill told DAZN: “After the Martinez loss, I lost touch with myself. I broke up with my wife. On 30 June I was in a field… and I was going to kill myself.
“Somebody came and saved me that day.”
Despite starting as underdog in their WBA international super-featherweight title fight, Gill floored Conlan in the second round and finished the fight in the seventh.
Gill had won the European crown by beating Karim Guerfi in February last year, but lost it by fourth-round stoppage to Martinez at Wembley eight months later.
