Mayweather: Terence Crawford is pound-for-pound king, not Canelo Alvarez
Floyd Mayweather has disputed Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez's claim to the pound-for-pound crown.
Floyd Mayweather has disputed claims that Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is boxing's pound-for-pound king, stating the crown should be given to Terence Crawford.
Canelo is due to face Britain's Billy Joe Saunders on Sunday and three more straps are on the line. Canelo is the reigning WBC and WBA champ at super middle, while Saunders holds the WBO belt.
When the bout was in development, Mayweather was asked about Canelo's rank as pound-for-pound king.
The American said: "It's a couple of guys that's up there in pound-for-pound.
"And pound-for-pound I would have to say Terence Crawford. Crawford is the number one guy pound-for-pound."
It's hoped that the southpaw will take on fellow American Errol Spence Jr, who holds the WBC and IBF world championships in the same division and is also undefeated.
