eWBSS: Muhammad Ali downs Evander Holyfield in five, Joe Frazier or Lennox Lewis next
Muhammad Ali proved too much for Evander Holyfield in the first quarter-final of the World Boxing Super Series.
Yes, you heard correctly. Ali did the damage in round five to advance into the last four of the heavyweight tournament.
With no live action available, the World Boxing Super Series has treated fans to an esports version, which involves eight heavyweight greats from different eras battle it out for supremacy.
‘Iron’ Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Erich ‘Butterbean’ Esch, Lennox Lewis, David Haye, Holyfield and Ali are the e-fighters chosen.
The simulated EA Sports’ Fight Night Champion game - commented by the legendary Teddy Atlas - is much-needed for fans across the globe, who remain indoors because of the coronavirus pandemic.
e-Analysis of Ali-Holyfield
When the draw was made this week, fans were licking their lips with anticipation of Ali taking on Holyfield. Both men had won gold medals at the Olympic Games in Rome and Los Angeles, respectively and ruled the heavyweight division on multiple times.
The question was, who would blink first?
After four rounds of pulsating action, it was ‘Real Deal’ who blinked, getting decked to the canvas in the fifth round. Beating the count on the first knockdown, a brave Holyfield was unable to get back up from the floor on the second count.
Expressing his delight, he said: “What a storming performance by the GOAT!. A scorching first fight to get us underway! Great courage and skill also showed by ‘The Real Deal.’

This eWBSS stuff reminds me a bit of the Marciano vs Ali simulation match. It was a huge event and was taken (far too) seriously, even being sold on VHS!

A career-best performance from e-Ali! Dominant showing from the tournament favourite with a 5th-round KO! #eWBSS

Lovely variation with the jab by Ali to set up the opening for the lead right uppercut (!?) that stuns Holyfield. Upstairs, downstairs... BOOM! 💥

Doesn't rush in and smother his work when he has his man hurt.
Puts his punches together nicely and gets the KO. 🐐#Boxing #eWBSS https://t.co/WWhlQvfYvP
