Charley Davison impresses as British trio advance into next round

Charley Davison

Four out of five Team GB fighters have now progressed into the next round...

British trio Charley Davison, Ben Whittaker and Luke McCormack all won their opening fights at the Olympics.
Davison, who returned to the sport in 2019 after a seven year hiatus, delivered an impressive performance, outpointing Rabab Cheddar of Morocco via unanimous decision in the women's flyweight division.
The mother of three dominated the first two rounds before remaining composed in the third round to earn a 5-0 victory.

Lowestoft's Davison will take on number two seed Yuan Chang of China next.

Whittaker, a fighter tipped for Olympic glory by heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, overcame Colombia's Jorge Luis Vivas by split decision in the men's light heavyweight category.

Based on his performance on Sunday, AJ's comments are justified.

Vivas was a dangerous opponent for Whittaker, but the World Championship bronze medallist boxed with maturity and will now face Abdelrahman Oraby of Egypt in the last-16.

McCormack also won with a split decision verdict, defeating Manish Kaushik of India in the lightweight competition.
The Sunderland fighter, whose brother Pat fights on Tuesday at welterweight, defeated a fighter who claimed bronze at the 2019 World Championships.

The final round saw McCormack clinch victory. He will now face the much fancied Andy Cruz of Cuba next - the number three seed and reigning world champion.
