Carlos Adames retains WBC interim middleweight title with ninth-round TKO win
Carlos Adames beat Julian Williams by ninth-round TKO to retain his WBC interim middleweight title but there will be questions asked about why the referee stopped the fight so quickly.
There is no question that Adames rocked Williams in the ninth round but the fight had been brutal all the way through, with both fighters landing plenty of big blows.
So the decision to end it so abruptly in the ninth when there was every chance Williams could recover and fight back seemed like a strange call by the referee.
To underline the point, as the referee stepped in to call the fight, Williams landed a big right hand on the man that was about to be declared the winner.
Adames thinks the ref made the right call in stopping the fight but Willimas, not surprisingly, wasn't as convinced.
"I think it was a terrible stoppage but what could I do?" Williams told Showtime's Jim Gray. "That's BS."
