Arsen Goulamirian wears Alexey Egorov down to retain WBA cruiserweight title
French powerhouse Arsen Goulamirian overcame Alexey Egorov with a unanimous points decision win after the gruelling brawl between the two went the distance.
Goulamirian showed his championship credentials and superiority as a fighter after almost losing but managing to fight back from behind to earn the unanimous decision and keep hold of his WBA cruiserweight title belt.
Despite the fight being so close, the decision was beyond doubt as the judges were all in the same ballpark at 116-112, 117-111 and 116-112, with several leading pundits having similar scores as well.
The fight was a year in the making after it was originally set to take place last year but was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
There is no doubt it was worth the wait.
The fight started tentatively with both men leaning on their jabs to find early openings and Egorov got the better of the early exchanges.
He was particularly effective with his combos and keeping Goulamirian off balance.
However, by the third the Frenchman had settled into the bout and began to fight his way back into contention.
He came out particularly hard in the six, seventh and eighth rounds to take the fight out of Egorov's hands.
By the 11th and 12th it was clear there would only be one winner but it was an intense battle all the same.
