San Francisco 49ers fielding shock Trey Lance trade calls ahead of upcoming NFL draft
The San Francisco 49ers have been fielding trade calls regarding former No.3 overall pick Trey Lance ahead of the upcoming NFL draft.
The San Francisco 49ers could move on from former No.3 overall pick Trey Lance after fielding trade calls ahead of the upcoming NFL draft.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday that the Niners have received several enquiries from teams looking into a potential trade for the young quarterback.
Rapoport added that the conversations have resulted from San Fran receiving calls rather than actually making them.
With former seventh-round pick Brock Purdy expected to land the starting role in Kyle Shanahan's offense after his outstanding performances last season, that has led to rumours that Lance could be available.
San Francisco traded up to the No.3 overall pick prior to the 2021 draft to select Lance, giving up three first-round picks in the process.
Lance played sparingly as a rookie, appearing in just six games with two starts. He entered 2022 as the starter but suffered an unfortunate season-ending ankle injury in Week 2.
Purdy's emergence then made Lance's future in San Francisco uncertain.
However, Purdy himself is still battling an elbow injury and it's thought that any potential Lance trade will likely be on hold for now while the former's rehab continues.
With Purdy unable to throw until June and Shanahan also stating last month that the QB may not be ready in time for the new season, any trade of Lance could be ill-advised at this stage.
The Niners did, however, sign Sam Darnold this offseason as insurance, with Lance and Purdy dealing with injuries entering 2023.
All focus is now expected to switch to the upcoming NFL draft, which takes place from April 27-29, with San Francisco's first pick not coming until round three - number 99 to be exact.
