McCoy rides Ballynacree to glory

2012-04-10 06:36:05

Tony McCoy rode the mount to victory ahead of Gorgeous Sixty, ridden by Ruby Walsh, completing a fruitful day for the Irish jockey, who had already ridden four winners to victory

Walsh’s filly looked capable of winning the Hurdle, pushing Ballynacree hard for most of the race, but McCoy pulled away in the closing stages to win by a length and a quarter.
“He’s a great big horse and a bit of a trip will help him. He handles soft ground - he loves it,” said Roche, who was a three-time winner of the Irish Derby and enjoyed a successful 30-year career as a jockey.
“I’d imagine he would stay forever and I thought that’d be too short for him but we decided to run when the rain came.
“I’ll send him chasing now but that will be in the autumn as he’s had a hard season. He’s still only learning his trade.
“But he’s a terrible work horse - he hasn’t come up and won yet - he’s always behind.”
